Hi, I’m Trudie McConnochie.
I'm a freelance content writer, journalist and sub-editor living in Newcastle, Australia.
For 20 years, it’s been both my job and my joy to generate copy that sparkles. I graduated from the Auckland Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Communications (journalism major) back when Justin Bieber was still in nappies, though my obsession with the written word began long before. In fact, it was probably always destined that I’d end up in journalism – as a kid, I drove my parents bonkers with a constant stream of ‘why is that?’ questions, and would sometimes wake them in the middle of the night asking how to spell words (this generally did not end well).
My first gig was as a sub-editor at a business newspaper, then I segued into writing features for a teen magazine (career highlight: interviewing Abs from the boyband Five). I scored a gig at New Idea, first as a senior sub-editor, then as features editor. When I was made redundant due to the GFC, I glimpsed an opportunity to work across multiple publications to keep my always-busy mind stimulated; I’ve been happily freelance ever since.
I moved to Sydney in 2014 and freelanced as a writer and sub-editor for The Australian Women’s Weekly, CLEO, Woman’s Day and Women’s Health, among others. In 2015, responding to industry changes, I started copywriting for a PR agency (on a freelance basis) then found my niche in health and wellbeing copy for corporate clients. It’s clear to me that in the age of the influencer, there’s a real hunger for health information that’s both accurate and impactful, and my background gives me the skills to deliver this – fast.
In my spare time I inhale health and wellbeing information like millennials soak up gifs, and campaign quietly against the use of the word ‘whilst’ in modern parlance (please don’t use this horribly old-fashioned word).
Want to connect? Email me. I’d love to talk about how we can work together.
